Composite is a dental restorative/filling material made up of plastic like resin filled with glass having colour matching with that of tooth. So, they are highly aesthetic and inconspicuous in mouth. Tooth bonding is a technique used to bond the composite material with the tooth structure. This adhesion is not chemical but micromechanical. It is typically used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of teeth.

When is Composite Filling Done in a Tooth

Restoration of decayed Teeth: Composite is a suitable restorative material for the filling of especially front teeth because of its very good esthetic properties. Composite is available in variety of shades to mimic the colour of natural tooth. Although earlier composite was not indicated for restoration of back teeth because due to its poor strength it could not bear the masticatory forces of back teeth and restoration failed. But now with the advent of high strength composite material, it is preferred even for filling of back teeth because of its esthetics.

Diastema Closure: If gap is present between teeth, composite can be used to build up the teeth and close the gap between teeth. But if the gap is large then orthodontic treatment may be required. So, dentist has to decide that which treatment option is better for the patient.

Tooth Veneering: If teeth are discolored and discoloration cannot be removed by bleaching, then teeth can be reduced to as minimal extent as possible and covered by a layer of composite material to enhance the esthetics.

Correction of Minor Imperfections: Minor imperfections like chipped teeth or maligned teeth can be contoured and given proper shape using composite material.

Core Build Up: Composite can be used for core build up of the tooth required before placement of crown to give proper shape to the tooth.

Smile designing: Composite can be used to reshape the teeth and make the smile more pleasing if there are minor aberrations which are making the smile unaesthetic.
