In fact a gap tooth can be really quite cute and captivating. There are cultures such as in Nigeria that a woman with gap tooth is considered to be more beautiful and in France it is considered to bring luck.

There is a long list of people with gap tooth such as Condoleezza Rice, Jennifer Hudson, Elton John, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The gap tooth could be due to several reasons such as:

  1. The jaw bones
  2. The size of the teeth or
  3. Even overcrowding of your teeth

The size of the teeth and the jaw bone are the major factors involved. If the size of the teeth are small when compared to the jaw bone then you will have spaces and if the teeth are larger than the jaw bone then it will result in overcrowding.

Dealing with Gap Tooth

It is easy as it is luckily not a health hazard. Hence, if it does not trouble you regarding the way it makes you look then you need not do anything about it.

All that you need to do in that case is to brush and floss stringently so that no hidden food particles remain stuck there and cause bacteria.

The way that you deal with gap tooth are several. Let us look at a few of them

1.   Diagnose

The gap tooth can be treated if it is diagnosed earlier on. Hence, if you notice it get yourself to a dentist promptly.

2.   Cosmetic Procedure

1) Braces

Once it has been diagnosed by the dentist you will have to undergo a cosmetic procedure to align the teeth by straightening them out. This is usually done by the means of braces which are used to close the gap between the two teeth. The main drawback to this method is that it is time consuming.

2) Retainers

Once you are done with the braces and your teeth have been aligned yet you must continue to wear retainers so that the teeth do not slide back into their original positions.

3) Tooth Bonding

This is a quicker procedure than braces and the bonding material used will be the same color of your teeth so that the gap will not be visible at all.Bonding provides a minimally invasive solution to closing the gap.

4) Cosmetic Veneers

Cosmetic Veneers are routinely used to fix teeth with gaps between them.

5) Invisialign Braces

These are also used as it is a kind of a clear plastic tray which will be fixed over your teeth to move them in line.

6) Partial Denture

This is a false tooth that is mounted on a plate and sits in your mouth to fill the gap. The main drawback to dentures is that they can come loose, which can be embarrassing, as well as making chewing tough foods and eating more difficult.

There are several times that the gap teeth are hereditary in families. Just because one of your parent or grandparent had it and it troubled them throughout their life they might want to have the gap tooth corrected in.

  • Dear SALLY, I won't recommend you tooth gap. Reason being that they can adversely damage the tooth alignment as they put great amount of pressure and they can even dislodge the tooth out of the socket. Also the movement caused by them is not promising enough because lets say if you have got the desired results but then you require something to hold on to that results like retainers after braces but in cases of Tooth Bands, no retainers are given so you are bound to suffer from relapse. So, my advise is to get a proper braces for your teeth. Though it will cause some discomfort but your problem will be resolved...

  • Hi, I have gap between every two teeth of the six upper front teeth, and I have been considering to get orthodontics treatment, but just like Sanya, I don't like braces and I'm hoping for the gaps to be gone in a short period. Regarding tooth bonding and the other similar cosmetic treatments, I think they are too costly since I have 5 gaps... So I searched and searched again for other possible tooth gap treatments, and then I found "Teeth Gap Bands", which sounds pretty much promising but I've read that the tooth's root could be damaged, so I'm now asking for your professional advice?

  • Bidemi, there is definitely treatment available for gap closure .Sometimes diastema or the gap occurs because of set of problems that require orthodontic treatment while sometimes it is the only problem.Usually people get braces, which move the teeth together and often, no matter where the diastema is, you must wear a full set of braces — on both your upper and lower teeth. That's because moving any teeth affects your entire mouth. If a large labial frenum is causing the gap, the frenum can be reduced through surgery called a frenectomy. If the gap is caused by periodontal disease, then periodontal treatment by a dentist or gum specialist (periodontist) is necessary. When gum health is restored, in many cases braces can be used to move the teeth into place. So i would suggest u to visit a nearby dentist and get ur clinical examination done to diagnose the exact problem n its cause and proceed with the treatment accordingly.

  • Carole, yes it can be treated. You must visit your dentist from whom the treatment is going. He will loosen up the appliance which will cause a slight movement of teeth gradually ending up your problem of gums. The only thing you need to do is to visit a dentist.
