  • Sodium fluoride as an anticaries mouth wash and the use of this mouth wash will help in reducing the decay. It is used to increase the fluoride exposure and is used as an adjunct to tooth brushing. Most common dental diseases are the dental caries and the gum diseases which are caused by bacteria. Bacteria cause the caries and are responsible for the formation of plaque which in turn causes most of the gum diseases and the bad breath. Use of mouthwash can reduce the bacteria in mouth and indirectly control most of dental diseases. Sodium fluoride mouth wash is considered as a safe method for fluoride application but caution should be exercised in young children under the age of 6 as chances of ingestion are there. In 15% of the cases, it causes staining, some show increase in calculus and in 5% of cases it causes taste alteration. Many brands of mouthwashes are available with 0.2% sodium fluoride.
